Two of my favorite illustrated forests are featured in our upcoming podcast season. The savage flora that sprouts up in Max’s bedroom in Where the Wild Things Are could never be confused with the reverie-inducing lantern-meadow of Journey. But they both provide imaginative sanctuary for a frustrated protagonist and a bit of repose for the reader.

It’s a little harder to withdraw into a thumbnail, but I still thought I’d take a beat and put together a little gallery of the most enjoyable woodland scenes from recent bedtime readings at our house. These are just my favorite illustrations; my list of favorite fictional forests might look more like this one.
